Social implications of national security workshop

A free all-day workshop open to all UOW staff, students and the public will be held on Monday October 29 covering the broad theme of the social implications of national security.
The main workshop sponsors are the Research Network for a Secure Australia and UOW’s Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention. The program chair is Dr Katina Michael with Holly Tootell as Program Co-Chair and Dr M.G. Michael as the co-editor of proceedings. All are from UOW’s Faculty of Informatics.
The title of the workshop is “From Dataveillance to Überveillance and the Realpolitik of the Transparent Society”. The workshop will focus on the theme of the transparent society. What is the cost of security that citizens are prepared to pay? Will surveillance technology force us to choose between our right to privacy and national security?
Dr Katina Michael said the workshop will delve deeper into some of the critical issues facing technology innovation and adoption, government policy, and the legal and regulatory framework behind this social-political landscape. Presenters for the workshop come from diverse backgrounds including legal firms, government agencies, academic institutions across Australia and individuals from the business sector.
Katina and her husband, Dr M.G. Michael, introduced the new concept of ‘überveillance’ which is now being embraced by a number of leading privacy researchers. It refers to an exaggerated surveillance and goes beyond the notion of ‘dataveillance’.
M.G. Michael defines the emerging concept of überveillance as an “above and beyond omnipresent 24/7 surveillance”.
The problem, he said, is that in human terms at least “omnipresence will not always equate with omniscience – hence the real concern for misinformation, misinterpretation and information manipulation”.
