Education takes to the beach on Sunday February 17 when University of Wollongong staff and students and a senior representative of the Department of Education and Training (DET) will join with members of the Towradgi Surf Life Saving Club.
Federal and State Government education departments are actively seeking teachers to gain broader experience beyond their school grounds and to participate in various community enterprises.
University of Wollongong Dean of Education, Professor Paul Chandler, said UOW has always been a leader in having their teachers become more aware of “their whole learning community” – that is, to develop a more holistic view of their surrounds.
In what is believed to be the first partnership of its kind, education students (initially UOW’s physical and health education students) will have ongoing active roles in the activities of the Towradgi Surf Life Saving Club. This will involve such things as supervising the club’s nippers, beach flags and participating in bronze medallion training.
To symbolise the start of the relationship Professor Chandler (along with UOW education students) will join Dr Phil Pearson (the Director of UOW’s Graduate Diploma in Education) and the Regional Director of DET, David Phipps, at Towradgi’s Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday. A barbecue will also be held to help celebrate the occasion.
When and where: 3pm, Sunday 17 February in front of the Surf Life Saving Club headquarters at Towradgi Beach.
