New ‘Vice-Chancellor’ takes over the reins
When Solveig Dewhurst arrives for work as usual tomorrow (Friday) at the University of Wollongong she can cruise into the Vice-Chancellor’s car spot, head straight for her new office on the top floor of Administration and summons her executive assistant to set the agenda for the day.
Ms Dewhurst is finally cashing in on the winning bid she made last October when the office of the Vice-Chancellor was auctioned off at the Pink Ribbon Breakfast in aid of breast cancer research. In her other life, Ms Dewhurst is the Executive Officer in UOW’s Faculty of Informatics.
The MC at the Pink Ribbon Breakfast was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations), Professor John Patterson, and he accepted the sum of $1,750 from Ms Dewhurst for her to become Vice-Chancellor for a day. Ms Dewhurst’s colleague, Dr Katina Michael, generously chipped in $250 that resulted in Ms Dewhurst’s winning the bid.
It was NSW’s largest Pink Breakfast and the sold-out event attracted almost 600 people and raised a total of $15,000 within two hours. It was part of an overall campaign to raise breast cancer awareness and help fund research.
And what will the real Vice-Chancellor (Professor Gerard Sutton) be doing tomorrow while his office has been taken over? It just so happens he will be absent from the University on Friday so he won’t have to watch as Ms Dewhurst stretches her feet out on his desk and fires off her commands to the troops.
