Photographic exhibition highlights fragile nature of environment

19 Sep 2008 | Bernie Goldie

A scientist with an international reputation in Antarctic climate change research will hold a joint exhibition of Antarctic photos at Artinport in Port Kembla from September 28 to October 11.

Fragile Nature is an exhibition of photographic prints highlighting the fragile nature of our environment in a rapidly-changing world. It’s a joint exhibition by UOW’s Director of the Institute for Conservation Biology and Law, Associate Professor Sharon Robinson, and artist, photographer and graphic designer Andrew Netherwood.

Professor Robinson’s images are from her trips to Antarctica as a research scientist while Andrew’s come from various locations around the world.

The images were selected because their subjects highlight states of natural fragility in some way.

“Fragility can be seen on many levels, from the physical delicacy of a spider’s web, through the vulnerability of a seasonal habitat to the increasingly fragile global ecosystem,” Professor Robinson said.

She said changes in any of the levels could profoundly affect the other levels.

“Science aside, we hope the images stand alone as being visually compelling as well as providing a stimulus for rational and spiritual contemplation,” Professor Robinson said.

Media please note: the official opening will be held at 6.30pm on Friday October 3 at Artinport, 80 Wentworth Street, Port Kembla
