From a robot programmed to avoid objects . . . to clothes lines sensing the weather

22 Oct 2008 | Bernie Goldie

Students from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering and the School of Information Systems and Technology will hold their annual trade show and research showcase on Thursday 23 October. It will be followed on Friday 24 October by students from the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications holding their 11th annual trade fair to showcase products they have developed.

One of the highlights at tomorrow’s trade fair will be a visually appealing demonstration of a robot which has been programmed to avoid objects while navigating around an open space.

The event will be opened at 1pm by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations) Professor John Patterson with a keynote address from the Chief Product Architect for Andrew Corporation’s Geometrix Mobile Location Centre, Martin Dawson.

Best opportunity for a photo of the robot in action would be around 1.45pm tomorrow. There will also be a range of projects on display from diverse areas such as computer security, eHealth, eLearning and eGovernment, multimedia signal processing and semantic web and artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, Friday’s trade fair will feature a display of products designed by engineers and internet technology professionals of the future.

Products on show will include the blind person’s assistant and the fall-guard, the runners health monitor, coffee making machines, gaming devices for advanced gamers, entertainment sound systems which track multiple users in different rooms and clothes lines which sense the weather.

Students will be on hand to explain the usefulness of their prototype hardware and software products.

The Friday trade fair will run from 3pm to 5.30pm.

Venue: Both trade fairs will be held at the University Hall
