Journal launch: tide comes in for creative writing students

24 Oct 2008 | Kate McIlwain

Creative Writing students at the Faculty of Creative students are gearing up to celebrate the launch of the 5th Edition of Tide journal.

Tide – named because it spells ‘edit’ backwards – showcases the work of emerging poets prose writers, playwrights and visual artists. Third year editing students from Creative Writing produce the journal each year.

Some of the stories in this year’s edition include ‘Dirt’ – a one-page story that never uses the letter ‘e’, ‘March of the caterpillars’ which can be sung to the tune of a circus theme song and ‘Sucking teeth’ – where the main character has the urge to suck teeth and who works for a magazine for people interested in the art of life-like doll making!

By producing the journal, students gain professional experience by working as editors, fundraisers, designers and publishers during their final study session. Lecturer Shady Cosgrove, from the School of Journalism and Creative Writing, said working on Tide is great experience for students.

“This provides a wonderful opportunity for students to learn practical, hands-on skills in editing and publishing,” Ms Cosgrove said.

“They should be very proud of this latest effort.”

Student Emma Osborn said working on tide was overall a good experience but there was a lot of work to do along the way.

“Working on Tide was really challenging, it involved a lot of out of class time,” she said.

“We all spent many hours sitting at bake stalls or garage sales, or on computers or rereading the submissions a million times.”

Tide is supported by the UOW Faculty of Creative arts, design and creative writing lecturers, businesses and community members in the Illawarra and Sutherland Shire as well as other artists and writers.

The launch party for Tide will be held on Friday October 24 at 7pm in the Faculty of Creative Arts. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.
