University to host inaugural Expo for Parents

28 Oct 2008 | Bernie Goldie

An inaugural Parents Expo – which will provide parents, parents-to-be, grandparents and other carers with information on issues pertaining to children – will be held at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Wednesday 29 October).

As part of the Employment, Equity and Diversity (EED) Unit’s Linking Women program, the Working Mothers Forum is holding the Parents Expo. It is designed based on feedback from UOW staff who are parents and carers of children from 0-18 years.

Community-based and other organisations have been invited to hold an information booth.

They will explain the services they provide and will try to answer questions regarding day and out of school hours care, holiday activities, transition to school, childhood development, disabilities, the impact of the media on teenagers and mental health.

Organisations participating include the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service, Autism Spectrum, Playgroups NSW, the Conservatorium of Music, Centacare, Relationships Australia and the Centre for Health Initiatives, Kids’ Uni, the University Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Illawarra Children’s Services.

Some of the booths will be highly interactive with videos and specialised equipment and poster displays of issues relating to children’s health. There will also be a range of other information available on the day, providing information on parenting, multicultural issues, as well as activities and services available in the Illawarra.

EED Director, Ms Lynne Wright, said it was a great opportunity for UOW staff to come and meet other parents with similar questions and problem as themselves, as well as get information to help them with the challenging task of parenting.

“In recognition of the diverse child rearing arrangements families have these days, we encourage grandparents and other carers to come as well,” Ms Wright said.
