HSC English Extension day helps students get ahead
6 Nov 2008 | Kate McIlwain
Around 270 students and teachers from the Illawarra and surrounding regions will attend a half-day seminar for HSC students studying English Extension tomorrow (Friday November 7) at the University of Wollongong.
The seminar is designed to be an intensive introduction to English Extension to help students get a head start on their studies. It aims to stimulate students’ interest in the subject as they begin studying towards their HSC.
The School of English Literature, Philosophy and Languages and the School of Creative Writing will run the seminar.
According to the NSW Board of Studies, English Extension courses are designed for students with a specialised interest in English. English Extension 1 asks students to engage with complex texts and look at the multiple meanings and values in the texts, while English Extension 2 asks students to write, record or film an extended creative project of their own choosing.
To address the complexity of the English Extension course, tomorrow’s seminar will look at some of the texts and modules that students will learn about in the coming year. It will also teach them how to make the most of resources at the University of Wollongong library and will feature a creative writing workshop.
The program has been tailor made for the students at the seminar, and will focus on the most popular texts according to teachers who are attending.
Media please note:
The best time for photos/filming is during morning tea, held at 10.30am – 10.50am. Students ay also be available to interview at 12.15pm, before the end of the creative writing workshop at 12.30pm.
