High-performing centre to receive further $7.7 million
The Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Margaret Sheil, has announced that the University of Wollongong’s ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science will receive a further $7.7 million in funding from July 2010 until December 2013.
The funding announcement follows an external Review Panel’s recommendation that funding be extended as the centre had developed a strong profile in Australia and overseas.
The Panel said it was also pleased with the centre providing a supportive and stimulating environment for the next generation of researchers.
“ARC Centres of Excellence concentrate expertise and encourage collaboration among high-quality researchers to maintain and develop Australia's international standing in research areas of national priority,” Professor Sheil said.
In 2005, the ARC provided funding of $24.4 million, under the National Competitive Grants Program, to establish 11 ARC Centres of Excellence.
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science was established in 2005 to:
• Create new electromaterials that will stimulate advances in the fields of energy conversion (including artificial photosynthesis, energy storage and bionic systems)
• Develop the science of electromaterials at the nano and macro dimensions
• Integrate these novel electromaterials into frontier technologies and devices of major economic value to Australia such as solar cells and supercapacitors, lightweight batteries, artificial muscles, hydrogen generation for fuel cells and development of bionic implants and
• Introduce and disseminate new expertise in electromaterials into the Australian workforce
The Executive Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science is Professor Gordon Wallace who is Director of UOW’s Intelligent Polymer Research Institute. Professor Wallace is also UOW’s sole ARC Federation Fellow. These fellowships are awarded to outstanding researchers to help retain their skills in Australia.
