Medibank Private supports health-related projects at Shoalhaven Campus

Australia’s largest integrated health services and insurance group, Medibank, will provide financial assistance to postgraduate students at UOW’s Shoalhaven Campus who are undertaking projects on health in the workplace.

Medibank will donate $10,000 to the students working on projects and research associated with the Australasian Occupational Science Centre (AOSC) based at the Shoalhaven Campus. AOSC Director, Dr Alison Wicks, said the contribution was greatly appreciated and would be put to good use.

Dr Wicks said that Medibank Private’s generous support of AOSC was an extension of AOSC’s relationship with Health Services Australia (HSA) which began several years ago with discussions about mutual benefits of collaboration and community engagement. Dr Wicks was also a speaker at the 2006 HSA annual conference where she promoted AOSC’s occupational perspective which focuses on what makes and keeps people well rather than what causes them to be ill.

Medibank has had a strong interest in workplace health for some time and Managing Director, George Savvides was happy to continue the relationship following its merger with HSA.

“We have recently strengthened our capability in the area of workplace health and wellbeing through our merger with HSA, and we will continue our leadership role in preventive health. Encouraging development in this field is essential and the AOSC is undertaking some very valuable work,” Mr Savvides said.

“Medibank has recently merged with Wollongong-based ahm and we are keen to become more involved in the communities on the NSW South Coast. We’re pleased to provide assistance to research students associated with the AOSC. It is an important way of supporting the Centre and the University, as well as increasing knowledge and awareness of health issues.”

Medibank Private is a leader in providing corporate health cover products and offers a suite of health and wellbeing programs. Medibank’s Health for Industry and Work Solutions businesses deliver workplace health services such as health assessments, vaccinations, injury prevention and management, and rehabilitation services to government and corporate Australia.
