Illawarra innovation on show
The Illawarra Innovation Showcase will be held at the Innovation Campus on Monday May 25 as part of the Australian Innovation Festival.
Through lectures, tours, a competition and expo, a range of Illawarra organisations will show some of the ground-breaking achievements happening in the region. A selection of events is outlined below.
Community Tours
Tours of the iC Central Building and Australian Institute for Innovative Materials will run every half hour from 2pm-4pm. Participants are required to wear flat, covered shoes and safety glasses will be provided. ‘Bionics for 2020’ Competition
Dean of Science Professor Will Price will launch this science competition, aimed at students in years eight to 11 in the Illawarra, Southern Highland, Southern Sydney and South Coast. It asks students to think about the future possibilities of bionics and what they would design and why. The launch is at 4.15pm in the iC Central Building Foyer
Innovation Week Expo
From 2pm-6pm in the iC Central Building Foyer, a range of Illawarra organisations will be demonstrating ideas and innovative projects being developed. Organisations include the Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute, Illawarra Business Chamber, Future World, TAFE NSW, Office of Community & Partnerships at UOW, AusIndustry, Enterprise Connect, the Science Centre and Your Online Community.
Seminar series
Between 4.30pm-6.45pm a range of presentations covering arts, health and ageing, business, science and sport will be presented in the Ocean and City Rooms at iC Centre. At 5pm Professor Gordon Wallace from the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute will speak on organic bionics and linking the world of electronics and biology to produce revolutionary medical devices.
At 6.15pm Professor Jan Potter from the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute will talk about “how to stay upright and well in old age.”
Innovation Week Lecture
The keynote lecture for Innovation Week will be given by Paul Bourke at 7pm at the Science Centre & Planetarium. He will speak about science visualisation and engaging display technologies. The Science Centre is using visualisation to demonstrate nanotechnology and is about to open a stereo theatre, which will be an exciting attraction for the region's industries and tourist attractions.
