Federal Government announces latest round of ARC Linkage Projects

UOW’s research partnerships’ credentials receive a boost

The University of Wollongong’s international reputation as a research-intensive university received a major boost today following the Federal Government’s latest round of Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects.

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, announced the 238 Australia-wide projects (which involve universities linking with various industry outlets) which saw UOW placed seventh nationally alongside -- and ahead of -- its much larger metropolitan counterparts.

UOW secured 10 out of 16 submitted projects for a total of $2, 967,236 giving it a success rate of 62.5 per cent against the national average of 45.6 per cent.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Judy Raper said it was particularly pleasing to see many early young researchers named among the 10 successful projects.

Some of the successful projects at UOW included:

The use of social marketing strategies and adult education principles to improve asthma self management in older people

Advanced materials for stents

Development of advanced lithium ion battery and battery management system for electric/hybrid electric vehicle applications

Emergency control of catastrophic disturbances in a power system

Change and continuity: chronology, archaeology and art in the North Kimberley, Northwest Australia
