Pro Vice-Chancellor appointed to meet strategic health priorities
As the area of health has become one of the University of Wollongong’s strategic priorities, University Council at its meeting on 19 June approved the newly-created executive position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health).
The current Executive Director of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) and Executive Dean of UOW’s Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Professor Don Iverson, will take up the appointment as of today (22 June).
UOW is now running a diverse health agenda including:
• Graduate School of Medicine
• Division of Health and Behavioural Sciences
• Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute
• Centre for Health Service Development in the Sydney Business School
In addition, there are a number of substantial health-related research initiatives that have been undertaken by established research groups across the University.
In an attempt to expand the scope and depth of its health-related teaching and research agenda, UOW will continue to develop links with Area Health Services throughout NSW as well as with universities and health research institutes in Australia and overseas.
The new position was created to provide an overarching vision for the various health-related facilities and to ensure co-ordination across the various areas at the executive level.
Professor Iverson has held senior positions in government agencies including Associate Director of Cancer Control Science -- US National Cancer Institute within the National Institutes of Health; Special Assistant -- Office of Health Information, Health Promotion, Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine in the Office of the US Surgeon General; and Professor of Family Medicine in the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
He has also served in a range of non-government health organisations and served on a number of governing/advisory committees overseas and in Australia.
Professor Iverson currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Breast Cancer Centre of Australia, as a member of the Education and Workforce Committee of the NSW Cancer Institute, as a member of the Research Committee of the Cancer Council NSW, and as a member of the International Advisory Committee on Research of the Alberta Cancer Board.
Professor Iverson is a Canadian citizen holding a permanent Australian residency. He earned a BSc from the University of North Dakota, and a MSc and PhD from the University of Oregon. He has published in excess of 100 articles, book chapters and editorials on a variety of health-related topics.
