Illawarra Regional Food Forum attracts array of speakers

Celebrated nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton will join an array of speakers at the Illawarra Regional Food Forum to be held at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Wednesday 1 July).

Food Fairness Illawarra in conjunction with the University of Wollongong is hosting the forum which will focus on a safe, fair and sustainable food system in NSW. 

Other speakers at the forum will include:

    • Urban planning expert, Associate Professor Susan Thompson from the University of New South Wales, who will present on ways to build a sustainable fair food system for the Illawarra region

    • Mayor of Kiama, Sandra McCarthy

    • Director of Population Health, Planning and Statistics, South Eastern Sydney Area Health, NSW Health Department, Dr George Rubin

Dr Rubin will officially open the forum which runs from 9am to 1pm. Other attendees come from a wide range of organisations in the Illawarra.

UOW’s Associate Professor Heather Yeatman will facilitate discussion around health and food safety.  Additional discussion sessions will focus on access to healthy food, urban planning for a healthy food supply and sustainable agriculture and food.

Food Fairness Illawarra is an alliance of members under the umbrella of Healthy Cities Illawarra, and includes members from the University of Wollongong, South East Sydney Area Health Service, Wollongong City and Kiama Councils, the Cancer Council, food aid providers such as Manna House, and other organisations and community members.  Tomorrow’s forum is linked to a network of regional forums as part of the lead-up to a food summit in October:  "Hungry for change: NSW Food Summit". 

There are photo/filming opportunities tomorrow from 9am to 9.30am in the foyer of Building 41 (Science Bldg) when registration is taking place or at 11.30am at the same venue during the morning tea break. Please note that Dr George Rubin may only be available at the 9am photo/filming opportunity.
