Coming of age -- UOW holds 21st Annual Accounting and Finance Doctoral Consortium

The School of Accounting and Finance will hold its 21st Annual Doctoral Consortium at the University of Wollongong tomorrow (Friday 31 July) with three guest speakers discussing carbon credits; accounting and the global financial crisis; and qualitative research.

“Accounting is not just numbers -- it is a language that shapes what society measures and values,” Acting Head of the School of Accounting and Finance, Dr Kathy Rudkin, said.

“This forum allows discussion and reflection on the power of accounting to influence society, the responsibility and ethics that accompany that power, and how wealth is distributed.”

Keynote speakers are Professor Kerry Jacobs from The Australian National University, Professor John Roberts from the University of Sydney, and Professor Sharon Beder of the University of Wollongong.

The School of Accounting and Finance is recognised internationally for its expertise in the area of critical accounting research. As part of the UOW Faculty of Commerce, the school is aligned with the Faculty’s purpose to ‘inspire socially innovative commerce’.

Last week the University of Wollongong launched its new Bachelor of Commerce for 2010. The new degree is the only undergraduate program in Australia focused on socially innovative commerce.

The Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Professor Shirley Leitch, said socially innovative commerce meant the creation of both wealth and wellbeing through sound governance, corporate social responsibility, ethical decision making, and environmental sustainability.

Emeritus Professor Michael Gaffikin established the doctoral consortium 21 years ago. As a forum, the doctoral consortium has connected more than 1,000 researchers, academics and students exploring interdisciplinary perspectives in the field of accounting and finance.

Consortium date and time: Friday 31 July from 9am to 3pm

Where: UniCentre Functions Rooms 3 and 4, University of Wollongong
