Underwater archaeology – photographic exhibition of seas, lakes and rivers of Italy
An exhibition of photos of underwater archaeology is on view in the University of Wollongong Library Panizzi Room.
The exhibition, hosted by Italian Studies in the Language Centre, Faculty of Arts, comes from the Italian Institute of Culture in Sydney and focuses on archaeological sites in the rivers, lakes and seas of Italy.
The photos provide a fascinating insight into the challenges of conducting archaeological excavations in popular water sites and the methods developed for these conditions.
Dottore Livio Loi, who liaised with the cultural institute to bring the photos to Wollongong and hung the exhibition, said the finds were spectacular and ranged from Roman ships to medieval canoes, as well as the more commonly found statues, pottery and coins.
The Director of the UOW Language Centre, Professor Kerry Dunne, said the exhibition illustrated the horizons opened up if you can speak a second language.
The exhibition runs from August 10 to September 4.
Media please note: It will be opened by the Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Dottoressa Alessandra Bertini Malgarini, on Tuesday August 18 at 5pm. As part of the Language Centre’s outreach program to the community, members of the Italian community are being invited to the opening.
