So you think you can Engineer? Women in engineering summit back in 2010

The University of Wollongong’s first “So you think you can Engineer?” summit, held in early 2009, attracted 94 young women in years 10, 11 and 12 from all around NSW – and due to the success and positive feedback received the event will be held again in 2010.

The four-night residential summit is for young women interested in a career in engineering and will be held at the University of Wollongong from Monday 11 – Friday 15 January 2010.

Organiser Dr Montse Ros, from the School of Electrical, Computer & Telecommunications Engineering, said the summit is an important event for the Engineering profession.

“We want to encourage young women to think about Engineering as a career, because they’re under represented in the workforce,” she said.

Participants will be exposed to a large range of engineering disciplines including environmental, civil, mining, mechatronics, materials, mechanical, electrical, computer and telecommunications engineering.

The summit’s 2010 sponsors include the Roads and Traffic Authority, RailCorp, Cochlear, Wollongong City Council, and Fulton Hogan. The busy program includes a site visit to the Gateway and RailCorp, as well as talks from UOW students and young female engineers from the sponsors’ workplaces.

Other activities at the summit include invited speakers, hands-on workshops and interactive group activities. Participants will be provided current information about career opportunities in the engineering field and gain exposure to the world-class engineering facilities at UOW.

Applications for the 2010 So You Think You Can Engineer summit close on 2 October 2009. Interested students can go to http://www.uow.edu.au/future/wiesummit to register.
