Plagiarism under the microscope at conference
Topics such as plagiarism will be high on the agenda at the 4th Asia Pacific Conference on Educational Integrity to be held at the University of Wollongong on 29 and 30 September.
Educational integrity involves topics such as plagiarism and values in teaching and learning as well as the broader educational context.
Keynote presenters include Dr John Lesko, editor of Plagiary: Cross-disciplinary studies in plagiarism, fabrication, and falsification, and Anna Broinowski, director of the film Forbidden Lie$.
Anna’s keynote address at 9.15am on day one of the conference is ‘Filming the con’:-- an examination of the ethical, cultural and artistic challenges involved in the making of Forbidden Lie$, a dramatised documentary about Chicago con-artist turned hoax author, Norma Khouri.
The conference will be a discussion-centred format where authors, rather than giving talks, will provide one-pagers to focus the discussion, with full papers posted on the web before the conference.
Other formats will be used too, including roundtables on the impact of new media on educational integrity, role playing ethical dilemmas and films. On Wednesday 30 September at 4pm a debate will be held entitled “Should we be Taught?” Team A (for the affirmative) comprises a Senior Lecturer from the University of South Australia, Tracy Bretag; a postgraduate UOW student, Paul Stuckey and UOW undergraduate student, Jennifer Woolsey. Team B (for the negative) comprises the Smiths Hill High School debating team of Natalie Connor, Solange Handley and Nathan Johnston.
The conference organisers are also running a student competition with video submissions on topics related to plagiarism and educational integrity.
A pre-conference workshop is being held today, Monday 28 September.
