By Bernie Goldie, 28 October 2009
Students’ creative skills will be on display at two trade shows open to the public to be held at the University of Wollongong on Thursday 29 October and Friday 30 October.
The Schools of Computer Science and Software Engineering and Information Systems and Technology will conduct their annual tradeshow and research showcase tomorrow.
Projects come from a diverse range of areas including: artificial intelligence, gaming, multimedia, networking, productivity, robotics, security and supply chain management.
This year the tradeshow will be opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations), Professor John Patterson, with a special keynote address given by Andrew Powell of Sun Microsystems.
Media please note: This event will begin at 1pm in the University Hall. For further information contact Daniel Saffioti on 4221 4357. The tradeshow website can be found at here
Meanwhile, a showcase of new age, technology-driven student products and projects will be on display on Friday, 30 October when UOW’s School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering host its 12th Annual Trade Fair.
The projects have been developed by second and third year Bachelor of Engineering students who have been studying the subject Engineering Design and Management and Mechatronics Design, as well as second year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Internet Science and Technology.
Projects fall into various categories such as home automation security systems or innovative teaching technologies which are hoped to be of benefit to Australian society.
The wide variety of student inventions will include a boxing robot, smart heat system and the virtual interviewer.
Acting Head of School, Professor Salim Bouzerdoum, said the trade fair provides students with a special opportunity to market the products that they have developed during the year.
“The students have had to work in teams to conceptualise, design, fund and manufacture the inventions that will be demonstrated at this event,” he said.
The trade fair will end with the announcement of the most popular display as voted by members of the public and industry representatives in attendance.
When: Friday, 30 October from 3pm – 5.30pm. Where: University Hall, University of Wollongong
