Smorgasbord of students’ work on show

From investigating the cost of healthy food in the Illawarra, to studying the effect of protein consumption on muscle development in athletes, a huge range of nutrition research is being showcased tomorrow (Wednesday 4 November) by students at the University of Wollongong.

Sponsored by the School of Health Sciences and featuring students from the Smart Foods Centre, the research day is the culmination of much hard work by undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in nutrition projects.

The day’s events are not only a great opportunity for the students to present their work, but provide a good example of how academic units and research centres at the University can work hand-in-hand with the Illawarra’s health services to ensure that students' first experiences in research produce useful and relevant outcomes.

For example, Shamley Chand will present on feeding assistance programs in nursing home residents, Elise Gruber and Bree Gabrielson will talk on nutrition for women with gestational diabetes, and Abby Morgan will present her work on trends in food costs in the Illawarra.

Other student projects being presented include:

    • improving nutrition in children

    • dietary intakes of children treated for cancer

    • dietary patterns and glucose tolerance in pregnancy

    • effective food service in hospitals.

Posters of the students’ work will also be on display.
