UOW Professor awarded first Hanbat University Honorary Doctorate
Professor Gordon Wallace will this week be awarded the first ever Honorary Doctorate in the field of science from Hanbat National University in Korea.
Acknowledging Professor Wallace’s significant contribution to higher education and to the development of international exchange between Hanbat National University and the University of Wollongong, the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering will be presented at a Conferment Ceremony in Daejeon on Thursday April 10.
Professor Wallace said he is grateful for the opportunities facilitated by Hanbat National University to further develop engagement with Korea.
“Global engagement in research and research training is essential if we are to remain at the cutting edge,” he said.
Professor Wallace’s team at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) at the University of Wollongong have worked with South Korean collaborators for more than 25 years, and specifically with Hanbat National University for more than 10 years on developing new energy storage materials including flexible and wearable devices.
In 2009, Professor Wallace was invited to join the Korean government’s World Class University project as a World Class Professor to Hanbat National University, spending several weeks each year in Korea, building expertise and further collaborations.
Established in 1927, Hanbat National University has developed as a specialist in industry-university collaboration and boasts a strong relationship with more than 1,300 companies including the research centres of large companies such as Samsung and LG.
ACES connections established through Hanbat have enabled further successful collaborations with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials to develop customised 3D printers, as well as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute to study cell/material interactions.
Following the Conferment Ceremony, Professor Wallace will present a Plenary Lecture ‘New Dimensions in Electromaterials Science’ at the Changwon Convention Centre.
